"Never assume an attack is legitimate" - only a portion of patents deemed standards essential may necessarily be so.

Where patent attacks come from: competitors, companies that assert a few key patents (icing), standard essential patents, "trolls" (cake).

Ownership of IP - important to check chains of title, legal entities and (sub) contractors. Often leads to problems.

RT: Registered designs: visual appearance. Single application for EU (a good relatively cheap option). Complete product or parts.

RT: Patents: require new and inventive feature. Term can be up to 20 years (but many engineering products can have a shorter 5-10 year life).

Trademarks: "soft" IP - more about protecting relationship with consumer and goodwill of a brand than product focussed.
