Electricity-led CHP - energy generation 24/7, use excess to provide heat (e.g. heat storage technologies).

Now Alan Seviour from Ace Energy Bath on micro-CHP.

In terms of sustainability we currently import nearly all biofuels in UK.

In UK as a whole - offshore wind is most efficient energy source - however, solar PV is better in South West.

Biofuel actually has quite a large environmental footprint - mainly due to the need for large built land areas.

Reliability is also a challenge for distributed energy generation systems. Also energy storage is still a problem.

[But micro-wind turbines are rubbish in urban areas.]

Distributed energy generation system is more biological - benefits from greater robustness.

One problem with centralised power - large inefficiencies & losses at the power stations (& some in transmission).

Thousand Flowers slightly left-field but has lots of interest from regulators - many small-scale community schemes (e.g. Local CHP).

Three transition pathways? Market Rules; Central Co-ordination; & Thousand Flowers.

Conflict between sustainability & energy market liberalisation?

Wow - take 150 years and energy use transitions are huge. Traditional > coal > oil > gas > renewable & mixed.
