Partner Nick Transier receives Super Lawyers recognition

7 October 2015

Partner Nick Transier has been named a San Diego Super Lawyers Rising Star 2016.

Super Lawyers celebrates those who have achieved a high level of professional achievement and peer recognition. Selection for the Super Lawyers list is through peer nominations and independent research and less than 2.5 per cent of eligible attorneys in the state of California achieve Rising Stars status.

Nick is head of EIP’s post-grant proceeding team (EIP Post) and also focuses on patent drafting and prosecution. His technical expertise is in computer hardware and software systems, additive manufacturing (3D printing), medical devices and mechanical devices among others.

EIP announces new UK and US partners

15 May 2015

EIP has appointed a new partner in its London office and promoted an attorney to partner in its San Diego office.

David Brinck joins the London office from patent and trademark firm, RGC Jenkins & Co., where he was partner for nine years. David is a specialist in electronics and optics and has almost 20 years of experience in private practice.

In San Diego, patent attorney Nick Transier has been made partner. Nick specialises in drafting and prosecuting patents related to consumer electronic devices, computer systems and mechanical devices and is a member of the EIP Post team, which acts for clients involved in offensive and defensive post-grant proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to joining EIP, Nick was with Cooley LLP.

Including David and Nick, EIP has hired six partners in the last 12 months, as well as six associates and one patent searcher. EIP has also hired seven trainee patent attorneys and IP solicitors, underlining significant expansion for the firm.

Jerome Spaargaren, partner, commented:“Having had such positive growth over the last 12 months, we are delighted to announce an additional two to the partnership. David is a highly recommended lawyer in the Legal 500 rankings and has almost 20 years of experience in private practice. Nick plays an extremely important role in our US office and has provided EIP and our clients with excellent knowledge, skill and commitment over the last two years. I am really pleased to have them both on board.”

EIP Post successfully defends client against four IPR petitions

12 March 2015

EIP Post has successfully defended four Inter Partes Review (IPR) petitions filed against its client, Good Technology Software, Inc (Good).

The petitions were filed by VMware, Inc. against four granted patents owned by Good Technology. The EIP Post team argued successfully that VMware’s relationship with AirWatch LLC should preclude institution based on a statutory bar. The Patent Trial and Appeal (PTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) agreed and denied institution of each petitions citing privity of interest in each instance.

The four IPRs at issue were: IPR2014-01324 against Good’s U.S. Patent No. 7,702,322; IPR2015-0027 against Good’s U.S. Patent No. 7,970,386; IPR2015-00030 against Good’s U.S. Patent No. 6,151,606; and IPR2015-00031 against Good’s U.S. Patent No. 8,012,219.
